If your air conditioner seems sluggish or struggles to reach the set temperature, the problem might not be the HVAC unit itself—it could be an aging or undersized electrical panel.
Critical Warning Signs
An HVAC system is only as good as the power feeding it. If your panel is 20+ years old, it may not be rated for the high-efficiency, high-draw motors found in modern 5-ton units.
- Dimming Lights: A significant voltage drop when the compressor starts indicates that your panel or service entrance can’t handle the load.
- Buzzing at the Breaker: This indicates a loose connection or a breaker that is “arcing,” which creates immense heat and is a major fire hazard.
- Burning Smells: This is an electrical emergency. It often means the high draw of the HVAC is melting the insulation on aging aluminum or copper wires.
